I also did the planning and booking on line myself. I searched the web for a for a Japanese Hotel, which their are only a few hotel web sites in English. On our first trip, when we arrived, we found that no one at the Japanese hotel could speak English. It was all part of the Adventure. Our 2nd trip we booked into a Disney Hotel, The Swan and Dolphin. There was always someone on the front desk who could speak English.
The Japanese people are extremely polite and helpful. It's really surprising to see such kindness in everyday people. We stopped on the sidewalk looking lost and had peolpe approach us, who spoke English offering help. We asked directions to a train platform from a transit cop, and he walked us to the site which was about a kilometer away! Tokyo Station is BIG!
Japan is very safe. We were never nervious where ever we travelled in Japan. People are so respectful to one another and everything is so orderly. You'll have a wonderful time!
While many things are different some things are familiar...
