If you're trying to find cheap flights to Tokyo but you don't know where to look, it gets to be frustrating! Just how do you find the good deals? Which sites are best? Are there things you're missing because you don't have all the facts?
We're pretty experienced now at finding flights to Japan at all times of the year and we know what's a good deal and what's not. It's not as hard as you might think... although it certainly helps if you know a few simple facts in advance. That's what this page is all about.

We've flown into Haneda airport a few times when we've traveled internally in Japan. From 2010 though international flights will also be arriving here. If you're lucky and land here, your travel time from the airport to the city will much be shorter.
Before we get started though, if you haven't yet downloaded your copy of ourTokyo travel essentials planner, take a moment and do this now. It's simple to get. All you need to do is sign up as a member of the site (it's free) so you can keep all your Japan vacation information in one handy place : )

Top tips for cheap flights to Tokyo. This is how we do it.

If you're looking for cheap flights to Tokyo these are the things you need to keep in mind so you can get the best price possible:

The advantages of booking in advance

If you can book your tickets in advance do! What do we mean by in advance? If possible at least 5 weeks before you fly.
We've done this many times and have watched the prices rise as we get nearer the date of departure. As the supply starts to reduce the price starts to go up. It's simple economics but something we tend to forget! Buy early and you can get in before you end up paying too much. It's a good feeling knowing you've got yourselves a good deal just by getting in ahead of time.

Do you know when the peak periods and quieter times of year are? You should!

It's important to know the busiest periods of travel in Japan. Why? Flights to Japan sky rocket at certain times of year. Again it's that simple law of supply and demand... and again we tend to forget it! Avoiding the peak periods will save you a chunk of change if you get your timing right and give you access to cheap flights to Tokyo.
So when are these peak periods? Make sure you know when Golden WeekObon, and Japanese New Year are happening as these times see the largest increases. If you want to be here during any of these special times of year, try and arrive the week before to minimize the impact of these price hikes.

Haneda airport is a great place to see planes take off and land. We like summer days here.

Are you able to travel midweek? Do you have flexibility in your schedule?

Another way to get cheap flights to Tokyo is by flying midweek. If you have a flexible schedule then make sure you let your travel agent know this. If you're booking your flights online, the major companies allow you choose this option in their search boxes when you plug in your dates. Just tick the option so the choices it gives you include dates either side for you to compare.
Why are midweek flights to Tokyo cheaper? It's back to the supply and demand thing : ) Weekends tend to be the busiest times to travel as many of us can only travel at these times. If you can be flexible on the dates you fly you can catch the cheaper rate.

I'm only flying one way? Is it cheaper?

Only flying one way? Still check the return flights! As daft as it may sound it sometimes costs more to fly one way than to buy the return ticket and just not use the return part of the flight.

Don't forget your local travel agent. Sometimes they have the sweetest deals

It's always worth checking with a local travel agent as well to see if they can beat the prices you find online. When you're looking for cheap flights to Tokyo, cover all your bases and you'll end up with the best deal.
Hopefully you'll soon be on your way to Tokyo and having the time of your life. Who do we book our flights with? We recommend Trip Advisor for booking your flights because of the great range of prices they bring back. Try it and see for yourself.
Remember, once you've ticked off your flights to Tokyo on your travel planner, it's time for step 5 on your checklist. Haven't got yours yet? All you need to do is sign up as a member of the site to get your copy. It's phase 1 of taking you step by step on your journey to Japan : )
