Our Tokyo train map section will give you all the important travel tips you'll need for getting around Tokyo with the least amount of fuss.
At first glance the train maps, the system, just the whole thing really, looks like somebody had an Andy Warhol moment with straight lines!
How do you figure it all out? It's funny, once you get your head around how it all works it's not as complicated as it looks. We highly recommend taking a little time to familiarize yourself witb the routes around where you will be staying. It makes things much easier once you get here.
Follow the links below to find out more.

JR East Train Map and Suica Card

JR East is the company that runs the majority of the overground train lines in Tokyo. The JR Tokyo train map details all the routes that are operated along with the station names in English, as of June 2008.
Use the key to find the name of the train line and then plan the best way to get from A to B.
JR also provides the handy Suica card - run on the same principal as Tokyo Metro's Pasmo - that you can carry like a credit card and charge up with cash. This makes hopping on and off the trains much easier and saves queueing to buy tickets each time you travel.

Tokyo Metro Subway Map

As well as the overground lines, there is anextensive network of underground trains, as you can see in this Tokyo train map of the subway.
In addition to giving the names of the stations in English, this map also provides a coding system for each station.
The coding is easy to follow. It's made up of a letter and a number, for example G1. The G is the first letter in the name of the specific line - in this case the Ginza Line. The number 1 means that is the first station on the Ginza Line.

Popular Lines on JR East and Tokyo Subway Routes

JR also provides the following Tokyo train map which shows a combination of some of the more popular lines both above ground and underground, including the Yamanote Line.
It can be confusing the first time you arrive here and have to negotiate the train system. Our tip is to take some time to familiarize yourself with the maps to get a sense of what's where. It will reduce the stress levels when you first land and help you plan what you want to see.
