Akihabara, commonly called "Akiba", is located in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, with Akihabara station at its center. It has Japan's largest concentration of shops selling electronic parts and appliances, making it the world's electronics quarter and a popular destination for tourists from overseas. Akihabara started off from a group of vendors selling junk parts and electronic goods, of which some later turned into game shops and hobby shops. Anime shops came last but largely contributed in making the town widely known as the "Mecca for Otaku (Nerd's Mecca)". Akihabara also is known as the trendsetter of subculture, particularly with its many maid cafes where female service staff members dress as maids. There has been much development in the infrastructure with the opening of Tsukuba Express Railway in 2005 and the completion of several commercial complex buildings next to the station.
