What do you need to know about the weather in Tokyo?
Understanding and predicting the Tokyo weather is considered to be a fine art - as are all weather forecasts in Japan. Why? Well quite a lot of the major cultural events absolutely depend on the accuracy of the weather forecast.
Take hanami season for example - that's the cherry blossom festival in Spring.
The weather forecast predicts when the blossoms will start and end in each area of the country - down to the exact day. If they get it wrong there is some serious apologizing to be done. I'm talking public apologies on the evening news! So yes, the job of forecasting the weather in Tokyo is definitely an art ; )
Similar predictions are made for the rainy season and koyo (the changing colours of the Autumn leaves), although it seems to be the Japanese cherry blossomforecast which is perhaps most revered.
Take your clues from the locals!
One thing to be sure of, if you've forgotten to check the weather before leaving your hotel or apartment and everyone around you is carrying umbrellas... there's a 99.9% chance that you're going to need one too - even if the sun is shining and there's not a cloud in the sky.
